Soil, Moss, and Other Bonsai Garden Essentials

In order to have a successful bonsai garden you need to have the best soil possible. It is first important to understand that you should never use garden soil in your bonsai garden. This type of soil is typically heavily ridden with bugs, pests, and even diseases that can really create a huge problem in your bonsai garden. In order to have the fewest problems possible you want to use a prepared soil, which is intended for repotting if possible.
While you need a repotting soil, you can use a basic soil there is no need to search for the most advanced soil you can find. Some plants do better with a simple soil rather than one that is heavily saturated with additives. If you have pines in your bonsai garden then you will need to use a grittier soil because they perform much better this way.
When you are looking for the perfect moss for your bonsai garden you may become frustrated, however it is possible to grow your own moss instead. This is much cheaper, plus your moss will not go through "shock" when it is planted. This helps your bonsai garden be much healthier.
As you progress in your bonsai garden, you will eventually need to pull the plant from the planter and trim the roots. When this is necessary, carefully remove the moss from the top of the plant and set to the side. Once you are finished repotting your plant you can carefully replace the moss. It will generally take a couple of weeks, but with proper watering your moss will begin growing again and be as healthy as before you moved it.
As your bonsai garden grows, you will experience some form of pest infestation at some point. Most of the time it is either aphids or scale insects, this is ok because they are some of the simplest to rid yourself of. However, it is important to check your bonsai garden each day to ensure that the problem is caught quickly and handled as fast as possible. If you wait even as little as a week before beginning treatment you could be allowing a few small bugs to become thousands which will take a lot more time and effort to get rid of.
Instead, closely monitor your garden each day when you are watering. Since you are already watering your plants, it makes the easiest time to do a quick check. If you find any bugs, it is always best to gently remove them. However, if you have a large amount of bugs you may need to seek the help of an insecticide to really keep the bugs at bay and off your beloved garden.

Important Considerations When Displaying Your Bonsai Garden

As you discover how much you love your bonsai garden, you are going to want to show it off. That is great; however, you should never display your garden in a place that is not safe. Either because of safety for the garden or because someone may pick it up and take off with it. Your goal is not likely to be growing these beautiful plants to end up in someone else's yard!
With this in mind you want to first make sure you keep your bonsai garden off the ground. The primary reason for this is to reduce the risk of bugs and pests. While some people may consider children pests, you should be more concerned about the pests with multiple legs that are small and cause serious damage to your garden. If you allow your bonsai garden to be on the ground, you are opening it up to dozens of pests each minute it is on the ground. Never, ever place it directly onto the ground in order to avoid as many pests as possible.
Additionally, you want to make sure that each plant has adequate sunlight and space. Many bonsai need a specific amount of space in order to "breathe" as well as make sure that plenty of light hits the tree. If your bonsai are crowded it will stunt the growth, reduce the amount of light it receives, and cause it to gain a sickly appearance. Remember, a sick plant is more likely to attract pests so you want your plant as strong and healthy as possible to avoid the bugs.
You have spent months growing your bonsai, this means you want to ensure that where you place your garden emphasizes the plants not the stand! You have not worked hard to buy a stand like you have to grow the bonsai. To make sure your stand does not steal the attention from your bonsai garden. If possible, something plain, rather boring, and sturdy is best so that attention is paid to your beautiful garden rather than the stand they are on.
Finally, ensure it is safe! You have not grown your bonsai just to have them fall over. You need to make sure that your stand is strong and sturdy to hold the weight of the bonsai without problems. If you suspect it is not strong, enough then find a new stand. Better safe than sorry.

Caring For Your Bonsai Plant

Bonsai are trees and shrubs that are grown uniquely small in containers. Originally it was meant to bring art and nature together and was a religious experience. Bonsai plants are not typically dwarfs but are regular trees and shrubs which are grown small using specific gardening techniques. The following are 6 tips for caring for this wonderful plant.
1. Light
Bonsai need light to grow. The type of plants will help you to decide the amount of light needed. Usually flowering plants require more light than conifers. Check for the lighting needs of your specific bonsai plant. Natural light is generally best, so put your bonsai in a spot that will receive plenty natural light. During the winter months you will want to augment natural light with artificial light. You can install a timer to allow the optimal amount of light on the plants.
2. Humidity
The majority of bonsai plants are tropical or sub-tropical. They are accustomed to a humid atmosphere and have a tendency to grow best with more humidity. In dry conditions the leaves and flowers may shrink. You may also want to spray the leaves with a fine mist to give additional humidity to the plant. Do not spray it in direct sunlight. You can provide humidity to the bonsai by placing the entire plant, including the pot, on a gravel-filled container that you have moistened with water.
3. Temperature
Most bonsai are used to mild temperatures and thrive best in these conditions. Specific species of bonsai plants need different temperature ranges. Research this when choosing your plants. Remember that the temperature will be affected by the quantity of light your bonsai gets.
4. Watering
The amount of water a bonsai needs will differ throughout the year. This is because the bonsai go through periods of growth and non-growth periods. They generally require less water during dormant periods and more water during their growth period. Flowering plants need more water and food just before and during the time it blossoms. Each type of bonsai plant have varying water requirements which you should check when buying your plants.
5. Pruning
Keeping them properly pruned is a big part of the enjoyment of bonsai. Always use sharp pruning shears when making the cuts. Be careful that you do not prune too much. Envision the total shape and look of the bonsai when you begin the pruning process. Thinning is typically done to avoid thick shapes and is usually done on the bottom third of the plant.
6. Repotting Bonsai need to be repotted frequently. The roots start to become entwined and impacted. When the roots become too dense there generally is not enough soil around the root system to keep it moist. The bonsai will not continue to grow in these conditions. The decision on how often to repot depends entirely on its growth. Some bonsai grow faster than others so when you decide to repot remove the plant and root from the ground. Clip away any of the smaller root system and repot the plant in a larger container.

Growing Bonsai with Artificial Light by Susan Slobac

Bonsai is a style of gardening that artistically miniaturizes trees by growing them in containers. It got its start in China, but also has famous schools in both Japanese and Korean stylings. While bonsai can be grown as outdoor plants, you can also grow some bonsai indoors using artificial grow lights.
The container adds a lot to the beauty of the bonsai. Make sure your bonsai pot has a drainage hole for excess water to escape. Informally shaped plants look super in round containers, while more formal plants shine in containers in more of a square or rectangular shape. You will want to select a pot that looks nice with the foliage of your bonsai.
The soil in which your bonsai tree lives need to be free draining. You will often find items such as gravel, fired clay pellets, akadama, and kanuma yellow pumice in a bonsai soil mix. The tree will need to be repotted every two years or so, and root pruned. This helps to keep the tree small and also encourages root growth, which helps the tree take in moisture more effectively.
You will need some special hand tools to prune your bonsai properly. A concave cutter will allow you to make pruning cuts that leave no stubs on a branch. Wire pliers, shears, and branch bending jacks are all used to help shape the tree into attractive shapes. The tree is wired with anodized aluminum or copper wire to help maintain the branches in the correct placement until they are set in position.
Wiring the bonsai tree helps to shape it properly. You can perform this task in the spring or fall ideally. You wrap the trunk of your tree in wire, and then spiral the wire around each branch of the tree so you can bend the wire in order to shape the tree as you wish. You then leave this wire on for a single growing season and then remove it before it leaves marks on the bark, or even girdles the tree, which can kill it. Thicker wires are used for stronger branches, and thinner wire for the lighter ones. Be gentle when bending branches, because it is easy to split or break them inadvertently. Instead, work slowly and make small changes, let the tree adapt, and then make another small adjustment, and in this way you can shape the tree without doing damage to it.
Bonsai can be grown successfully under fluorescent grow lights. You will want to keep your grow lamps very close to the top of your tallest tree. Simple light fixtures for this type of bulb come with electronic digital ballasts already installed, so they are plug-in ready. Leave them on daily for 16 hours.

Bonsai - Easier To Grow, Than You Thought!

This article will briefly explore the exciting world of bonsai and contain further links below, for you to explore and enjoy.
The term, "Bonsai" is derived from two Japanese words, "Bon", and "Sai". "Bon" means "tray". "Sai" means, "growing" or "planting". Many people are under the impression that Bonsai was invented by the Japanese.
Not true.
True, the Japanese developed bonsai into what we see today. However, the path leads back to China, where the first bonsai was grown. This Chinese art form was known as 'pon sai'. This method of art, bringing together beauty, truth and essence, in the form of the plant, container and earth, is described as, 'heaven and earth in one container', by the Japanese.
There is still pon sai in China, to this day, but it lacks the artistry, beauty and expertise of the Japanese developed bonsai . This art form demands infinite patience, imagination and care. Rare attributes in the frenetic pace and impatience of today, but well worth developing into one's character.
Japanese Zen Buddhism, was used as a basis to reform the rather ugly and somewhat tortuous pon sai, of the Chinese, into the forms of harmony and beauty of the Japanese bonsai, which we enjoy today. These miniature creations were first only to be found in their Buddhist monasteries, but later found favour with the Japanese ruling classes. Still later, ordinary lovers of this art form ensured its popularity to the present day.
Often, people think it refers only to a type of miniature tree, whereas it is a method of using quite a number of different trees and plants.
A very short list: Maple Cherry Azalea Juniper Apricot Pine Bonsai Privet
That was a brief introduction to the fascinating and calming art of growing bonsai. Follow the links below, especially to my new bonsai web site, for much more.

Caring for Bonsai Tree - 5 Simple Steps to Mastery

Here are 5 simple starter tips to get you on your way and help you with your bonsai tree. Even the most caring person can mean well but make mistakes. It is better to get a bit of knowledge under your belt before undertaking a new challenge such as a bonsai.
1. Most bonsai are outdoor plants. All too often the mistake is made that because it is a bonsai it should be kept indoors. Only if it is a tropical tree it should be kept indoors. Tropical trees are notoriously more difficult to take care of than native trees. I recommend therefore starting off with outdoor native trees as they are much more easy to take care of.
2. Bonsai can get stressed. Another main reason that your first bonsai can die is that it can easily get stressed just like humans can. Stress is usually caused by moving it around a lot so that it's confused about how hot it is or humid. Remember that it is totally unnatural for a tree to move around! When you first bring your tree home and place it in it's new spot it might lose a few leaves from the move. Do not worry too much and respond by moving it around some more! This will not help the cause, it needs to get used to it's new spot.
3. Bonsai need light. This one might seem quite obvious to most people but getting the amount of light is crucial to success. As a general rule leafy trees need to be kept in semi-shade and needle trees need to be kept in full sun. Indoor bonsai can get very hot left next to a window, try not to put them in direct sunlight.
4. Bonsai need water. Another one where most people will shout "Of course they do!". But again it is something that needs to be done just right. The soil in the bonsai pot should be gritty and free draining so that it is not too wet and causes root rot. At the same time it should not be allowed to dry out too much and make the tree wilt.
5. Bonsai need food. This is not such an obvious one and something that most people neglect. Because they are kept in pots we need to remember that they do not have any dead plant matter to feed on and the soil that they are in can get drained of nutrients. To solve this there are a number of different ways to feed the tree. I personally use a liquid feed once every 2 weeks to keep them strong and healthy. However there are other methods that you can use and don't have to implement so often.
If you follow these 5 simple tips I can pretty much guarantee that you have success with your bonsai for years to come. The hardest step is keeping your first one alive long enough to learn more specialized techniques which will come later on. If the worst should happen and it does die, don't fret too much. Some are notoriously harder than others to take care of and even experts find it a struggle to maintain them.

Important First Steps In How To Care For Bonsai Trees

The care for bonsai trees is a great hobby. However, for a lot of beginners, they find their newly acquired bonsai dead within the first couple of weeks after bringing them home. Bonsai trees are very sensitive to their environment. Following below are a few tips to remember in how to care for bonsai trees.
Bonsai pot
The pot or container to hold the plant is very important. They can range from cedar boxes, to earthenware pots to glazed porcelain. But make certain they have a drain hole so that excess water can drain away. The shape of the container is selected dependent on the style of the plant, from wide and shallow to tall and compact. The plant is usually planted off-center in the pot to give it that aesthetic effect.
Pruning
Both root pruning and branch pruning is necessary to maintain good health of the plant. Trimming or pruning of the tree branches is important to maintain the shape of the tree, while pruning of the roots, usually done when the tree is transplanted, is important in keeping the tree as a dwarf plant The shaping of the plant is also aided by the proper use of wiring the branches to the desired shape.
Watering
Watering is critical to the proper care of bonsai trees. Bonsai plants must be watered thoroughly when they become slightly dry. Any excess water will drain out through the drain holes in the container. Usually this means every other day in the summer, and every week or so in the winter. But don't submerge the plant in water. And the soil does not hold nutrients very well, so be prepared to fertilize regularly..
Winter care
If your bonsai is an outdoor plant, it already is a hardy species and can survive the winter weather conditionally.
If the winter temperatures normally stay above freezing, simply mulch the plant to just below the first branch. If your plant is potted and the winter temperatures normally fall below freezing, it would be best if the plant is brought into a shed or cold-frame for the duration of winter.
Just follow these few important steps in how to care for bonsai trees and your bonsai trees will stay healthy and attractive for many years to come.

The Juniper Bonsai Illusion

I think the biggest misconception I have faced while trying to explain what bonsai are, is breaking the idea that a bonsai is what people have seen in Karate Kid.
People in my entourage are now informed about what bonsai are. But, when I meet new people and talk about my interest in bonsai, I am always asked if I got those juniper as bonsai, just like the one's in Karate kid. I say that I have one, along the fifty others. I always get the same comment: "they are no bonsai, but trees"
Don't get me wrong, Karate kid was a great push for the bonsai community in America. It help put bonsai into a mainstream market, but also created some misconceptions. Bonsai are not only juniper as seen in Karate Kid. In fact, literally translated from Japanese to English, bonsai means a tree in a pot. So, may we conclude that every tree in a pot is a bonsai, and not just juniper? Aside from the purist bonsaiist who would call a tree in a pot a mere "stick in a pot" since it lacks the strict art guideline of bonsai, I like to say that every tree in a pot is a bonsai.
The bonsai's seen in the Karate kid's movies are named "Juniperus procumbens nana" scientifically. They are dwarf garden juniper. They are sold in almost every garden store in America. In their bonsai form, even Kmart and Walmart sell some bonsai in a bag/box. Other then being mistreated and in poor health, these tree don't have much offer.
Bonsai, as previously said, can be made up with any type of tree. Of course, some species are more popular, because they are easier to dwarf, more tolerant to training techniques and provide a better display of colors and form.
The best question to ask yourself when choosing a species to grow, it is not what species you would prefer, but what species can you grow in your area. Trees are susceptible to climate and temperature. Heat and cold, not all trees support either cold or heat.

Caring for Your Bonsai Tree

Watering - This is the most important aspect of caring for bonsai, especially for bonsai that are kept indoors for too long. Two things to remember about providing water for bonsai are the type of soil and species. Different soils will absorb and retain water at different rates and different tree species have varying degrees of water need.
The Japanese have a saying: water three times, each one for the pot, the soil and the tree. About 75% percent of water is taken in through the root system, but don't forget the leaves. Bonsai trees also acquire water through their stomata so make sure you wipe or wash away the dust and dirt regularly.
You should only use gentle water pressure when watering bonsai. Using excessive water pressure can wash away the topsoil and expose the tree roots. It is recommended that you use a misting hose or spray bottle that expels water in a fine mist. It is quite OK to use water from the tap, just ensure that it's not too hot or too cold.
Soil - Soil choice for your bonsai is critical for its health and long life. It really depends on the tree species of your bonsai, but generally, soil should be made of 30% humus and 70% grit for needled evergreen trees and 70% humus and 30% grit for deciduous trees. If you have a different bonsai species, make sure to look up which soil meets its special needs, since you might have to prepare a special soil mix yourself.
Pruning is the aspect of bonsai care that most beginners have trouble with. It's one of those skills that only really becomes fully formed with experience and knowledge. All aspects of a bonsai tree will need to be pruned at some stage - leaves, branches and roots.
Before attempting to prune the above ground aspects of your bonsai tree you should have a vivid image in your mind's eye of the tree shape you're looking to achieve. If you can do this and imagine a line around the tree in this shape you will be able to prune away everything that sticks out from this imaginary line.
Prune leaves or buds with care. Pruning buds will encourage back-budding and cutting leaves will 'discipline' the growth of the bonsai. It is also necessary to manage the nutrients that the roots draw up from the soil. Remember that you are trying to grow a tiny tree and letting it grow on its own will result in uncontrolled size.
Caring for bonsai takes lots of patience, knowledge and learned skills. It involves continuous work, but the results are more than worth the effort.

3 Top Indoor Bonsai Tree Care Tips

3 Top Indoor Bonsai Tree Care Tips
Because indoor bonsai tree care can be such a difficult process I have decided to share my three best bonsai gardening tips. These tips are absolutely vital if you ever want to grow great looking, healthy bonsai trees that will be a source of enjoyment and fun rather than a source of anger and frustration. Most beginners I have seen fail to properly follow these indoor bonsai tree care tips and because of that they achieve virtually no success at all. By following these tips you will give yourself a firm grouding in the proper care of indoor bonsai trees and you will be well on your way to becoming a "master" of bonsai.
Tip 1 - Don't Over-water and Don't Under-water
Watering is easily one of the most difficult (and one of the most vital) parts of indoor bonsai tree care. Under-watering your bonsai will of course lead to the dehydration and eventual death of the tree whereas over-watering will lead to the tree "drowning". To properly water your bonsai you should wait until the soil in the pot/container begins to dry out on top. Next, water until excess liquid comes out of the bottom of the pot/container. Don't water the bonsai again until the soil begins to dry out. By following this process you will find that the tree is neither dehydrated or over-hydrated which are two of the leading reasons why bonsai trees die.
Tip 2 - Root Pruning and Branch Pruning
To master the art of indoor bonsai tree care you must be able to prune properly. Pruning is done two different ways - "root pruning" and "branch pruning". Root pruning should be done at the start of spring and only when the bonsai's roots have become grounded in the pot. Simply select the roots you want to keep and get rid of the bad ones. Branch pruning should also occur near the start of spring. Pick the branches that you wish to keep and careful remove the others. Proper pruning is one of the most important factors in indoor bonsai tree care and without properly mastering this you won't be able to progress onto things like sculpting your bonsai tree into different shapes.
Tip 3 - Applying Fertilizer and Soil
Another problem many beginners face with indoor bonsai tree care is picking and applying correct fertilizers and soil. In order to pick the right soil you should head down to your local gardening centre (or bonsai centre if you're lucky enough to have one nearby) and tell the staff exactly what type of bonsai you have. They will then direct you to the correct type of soil. Please note that it is definitely worth buying the most expensive soil possible as higher quality soils absorb nutrients from fertilizers more effectively and therefore provide a better living environment for yout bonsai tree. To correctly pick fertilizer you should ensure that you purchase a high quality, water-soluble fertilizer that contains a good variety of nutrients. Fertilizers should only be applied during the growing season and must be applied only when the soil is wet or they loose their effect.
By following these three vital indoor bonsai tree care tips you will be able to grow amazing bonsai trees and avoid annoyances like having your trees die. I must stress that these are the foundations of proper indoor bonsai tree care - you cannot progress to any of the "fun stuff" (sculpting etc.) without first mastering these three basic principles!
Thanks for reading and good luck with your bonsai gardening!

What is Bonsai

Bonsai is the ancient oriental type of horticultural art form. The word Bonsai is going to mean tree in a pot. This is going to be true for both the Chinese and the Japanese language. It was founded in the Orient almost 2000 years ago and it is still a very popular form of art that is practiced throughout the world. The different shapes of the tree are carefully thought out and they are used to create a beautiful picture.
A tree that is planted in a small pot is not called bonsai until it has been pruned a certain way. It is then shaped and then trained to be a certain design. Bonsai is going to be something that is done carefully to control the plants growing conditions. The branches are the most important part of the bonsai tree and the overall design is going to be something that is creative and pruned a certain way. The roots are going to be confined to a pot and need to be clipped from time to time.
The appearance of the bonsai tree is going to that of an old age plant, is very prized, and will be around for many more years to come. A living bonsai is going to change from season to season and from year to year. It will require certain pruning and training throughout its lifetime. As the time goes on it will become increasingly beautiful and it will be a very popular way of living in the world of Chinese and Japanese traditions.
If you are looking for a great plant to use in your home or to give to someone special as a gift, you should think about the bonsai. This is going to be a great plant that is going to grow in most conditions and does not take much time at all from someone. A little bit of love and affection is just what the bonsai is going to call for. You will be able to see just what all the talk is about when it comes to this special type of plant and how important it is to the world of plants and culture today.
